The techniques in which the Egyptians worked their metals was unique and extremely fascinating. Developed during the Early Dynastic Period (2920–2575 B.C.E, smelting crushed metal ore and mixed it with charcoal, making charge, that would be burned and shaped.
Researchers identified a number of organic and mineral ingredients in the powders. Two of the mineral ingredients were naturally occurring ores which were crushed, ore of galena (PbS) and cerussite (PbCO3). However, the surprise came from laurionite (PbOHCl) and phosgenite (Pb2Cl2CO3), which were both compounds which occurred rarely in nature.
The kermes insect is a cousin of cochineal. It lives and feeds on the leaves and branches of Mediterranean oak trees, known as kermes oaks, rather than cacti that cochineal prefer. Leaching dissolves the gold out of the ore using a chemical solvent. The most common solvent is cyanide, which must be combined with oxygen in a process known as carbon-in-pulp. As the cyanide and oxygen react chemically, gold in the pulp dissolves. When workers introduce small carbon grains to the tank, the gold adheres to the carbon.
